In late 2016, I was invited by VanNess Wu (吳建豪) to listen in on one of his rehearsals for his upcoming show. After a few months, while I was preparing for 黃大煒's 2017 Concert @ Legacy, I brought up the idea of having VanNess as our special guest... During the rehearsals and performance, I got to know more about his band, and discovered that his guitarist, James Kerridge, is from the Pacific Northwest.
Later that year, I was looking for a guitarist for a section during my own concert at Clapper Studio. Since James and I built up a connection during the year, I was delighted to have shared the stage with him!! While I was recording guitars for one of my songs on my upcoming album, I felt that something was missing. I didn't want to add another instrument, just another part, so I figured James Kerridge could help me out. I am soo glad I asked James, because his electric guitar tone and part really brought the different moving elements together.

This may be one of the most "complete" live concerts I have been to. I am not talking about the "music", as it already speaks for itself. The band's passion and energy was wonderful as expected! I am talking about the "experience".
From the start, 五月天 totally took care of their fans. Since the venue was outdoor, they passed out ponchos, as there was a chance of rain. It felt like a reunion, where every single person was soo respectful of each other and their surroundings! During the concert, we accidentally dropped something that fell too far away to grab. An amazing fan went out of her way to help retrieve the item!! Even while waiting for the extremely clean restroom, everyone was politely waiting and even shared a causal nod to each other on the way out! This kind of "culture" is superb, and truly mirrors the culture of the band! Now onto the actual show, it seemed that it was made specifically FOR their fans. Before the show, the staff passed out "light sticks". It wasn't anything special at first, but once the show started, every light was synced to the music, beat, and the band! It was like the audience was "part" of the show!! Not to mention, the build quality was one of the best! After the show, we were lucky enough to be brought backstage to personally congratulate the band. They are soo humble, kind, and passionate of music!! Overall, I am extremely impressed and touched with the experience!! This is what all concerts SHOULD be like! Thank you 五月天!! I am a fan!!! I still remember when I first heard Oren Dashti play piano... He actually wasn't supposed to perform that night, as a friend brought us together for drinks at a jazz club. However, as some may know, "sit-ins" are not uncommon. Oren jumped on the piano and called the beautiful standard, "Someday My Prince Will Come". His interpretation of the tune was fresh, yet still stayed true to the original melody; something I like and appreciate. Fast-forward to now, Oren Dashti's playing has elevated even more.
For one of my concerts in 2017, I wanted to try something different with one of my original tunes. The outcome really surprised me, and brought a new element into the song's feel. I am delighted to have Oren Dashti play one of my songs for my upcoming album!! His performance really gelled everything together, re-capturing the original live performance feeling!! You can find more about Oren on his website! https://www.orendashti.com/ I have played with many pianists before, but only a few of them can understand & hear what I am looking for… To me, there is a huge difference of “how to play piano” during certain circumstances. For example, a pianist should play differently in a “jazz trio” setting, compared to a “solo piano” setting, and most importantly for me, a vocal accompaniment setting. Matthew James Fullen (Matty is what I call him) is one of the pianists who does just that…
February 27th, 2016 marked the first time I performed a whole set as a duet with my great friend Matty. It was a lovely evening and for a wonderful charity, 為愛發聲… During rehearsals and especially the performance, there was a definitive musical connection between us, that the audience felt. I know this because till this day, I have fans who still mention that performance. I am proud and excited to have the opportunity to have Matty accompany me on one of my songs for my upcoming album. His sensitivity towards the intimate tune really brings out the story that many of us can relate to… I can’t wait to share with you all!! In 2013, I was looking for a double bass player for one of my live performances. A friend of mine introduced me to Kelvin Chuang, and we instantly connected. I am not exactly sure why, but it seems that I bring the best out of him whenever we play together.
So, when I hear a double bass in my compositions, Kelvin is one of the first musicians that come to my mind. He has a unique vibe and sound that blends well with the picture I want to paint. |
